You Can Always Make a Different Choice

I celebrated a milestone yesterday. One year alcohol free. One year sober. I'm proud of myself and the commitment I made on May 24, 2020. I made a decision one year ago that I wanted to change my relationship with alcohol. And, I honored that commitment. That, my friends and fellow Love Warriors, is A BIG DEAL.

I didn't hit some rock bottom last year. I didn't get a DUI. I didn't get into a car accident. I didn't lose my job, or lose a friend, or blackout somewhere. I simply came to the realization that alcohol was not serving me. I understood the ways that alcohol was hurting me. I knew the drawbacks outweighed the benefits. I clearly saw all the ways that alcohol was getting in the way of me living the life I truly want to live. So I made a change. I made a different choice. Without hitting rock bottom.

I'm still on this journey of exploring my relationship with alcohol. Some days, I feel like I'd like to have a glass of wine with friends. I imagine my anniversary or my first book deal, and I want to celebrate with some champagne. But most days, like today, I simply decide I'm not drinking. I'm not drinking — today.

I share this with you not to encourage you to stop drinking alcohol. I share this with you because I want you to know that you can always choose to make a change. A change about ANY area of your life. You can always make a different choice. You don't have to hit a rock bottom.
